Tennessee Robotics Team Advances To FIRST Semifinals.
The Maryville (TN) Daily Times (4/1) reports the University of Tennessee’s Tickle School of Engineering sponsored the Smoky Mountains Regional FIRST Robotics competition in Knoxville last weekend. At the event, the Blount County Robotics team earned “a spot at the semifinals.” BCR had to rebuild its team this year because “a large number of senior members graduated in 2017.” About 20 students and three STEM teachers – Maryville High School’s Jill McElroy, Alcoa High School’s Shawn Kerr, and William Blount High School’s Keith Shannon – currently participate in BCR. The team’s “robot had trouble grabbing and holding boxes during the matches” at the Palmetto Regional competition last month, so the students “redesigned its arm, carving pieces with a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine.” Once the competition season ends, BCR “will be recruiting through the summer and after fall break will focus on training, such as safety and how to use the tools.”
